STORY BEHIND THE DESIGN
Mizuhiki(水引) was originally inspired by “Chinese knotting” which is an ancient decorative handcraft art. Tracing back to the Asuka period, it was heard that a Japanese delegate received a present from the Sui dynasty of China, and the present was decorated with red and white knots. Since then, the Japanese empire followed the same style for decorations as a tradition.
As time went by, Mizuhiki had been widely spread by the folk of Japan, with different methods and designs being developed. For example, the Mizuhiki knots were created by twisting the flexible rice paper together, unlike the Chinese knotting that used silk and hemp.
Plum blossoms is a symbol of fortitude, integrity, discipline and innocence. In addition, plum blossoms are a pattern that is mostly chosen for making Mizuhiki knots for the blessings, as well as the joy for people who have survived from the cold and freezing winter.
A Reef knot, or in Chinese words 平結, has been well-known the most ancient, common and practical knot. It’s meaning wishes you a prosperous, stable, safe and peaceful year to come, 平(ping)also means all human beings are created/born equal, regardless of our differences.
